Seaworthy Packing

Industrial Export Packaging for Heavy Machinery

Complete guide to packaging heavy industrial machinery for international export. Structural design, protection layers, and compliance for machinery up to 100+ tons.

Heavy industrial machinery export packaging

Packaging heavy industrial machinery for export is the most complex and highest-stakes challenge in the packaging industry. A single turbine, generator, or press machine can weigh anywhere from 5 to 100+ tons and be valued at several crores. The packaging must be engineered to the same precision standards as the machinery itself, protecting against every hazard from factory floor to destination installation.

Engineering Approach

Every heavy machinery packaging project at Europack begins with engineering analysis. We calculate load distribution, center of gravity, lifting forces, transport forces, and environmental exposure. For loads exceeding 20 tons, we perform finite element analysis (FEA) to verify structural integrity of the packaging under all handling and transport scenarios.

Packaging Components for Heavy Machinery

  • Custom hardwood base with steel reinforcement for load distribution
  • Internal blocking and bracing to prevent all movement
  • VCI protection system for all metal surfaces
  • Aluminum barrier bag with vacuum sealing for corrosion prevention
  • Weather-proof outer covering (tarpaulin or shrink wrap)
  • Lifting lugs and marking for crane operations
  • Tie-down points for container and vessel lashing
  • Transport Modes for Heavy Machinery

    Containerized (FCL)

For machinery that fits inside standard 20ft or 40ft containers. Maximum practical weight is approximately 25 tons per 20ft container. Packaging must fit container internal dimensions with clearance for lashing.

    Flat Rack Containers

For machinery that exceeds standard container dimensions. Open-top and open-side flat racks accommodate oversized and over-height cargo. Packaging must be weather-resistant as cargo is exposed to elements.

    Break-Bulk / Project Cargo

For extremely large or heavy machinery shipped as individual units on vessel decks or in holds. Requires the most robust packaging and specialized lashing to vessel structures. Europack handles project cargo packaging for loads exceeding 100 tons.
