Forces Acting on Cargo During Transport

  • Road transport: Braking force 0.8G forward, 0.5G sideways, 0.5G rearward
  • Sea transport: Rolling/pitching forces up to 1.5G in heavy weather
  • Rail transport: Shunting forces up to 4G longitudinal
  • Air transport: Turbulence forces up to 1.5G in any direction

    Steel Strapping

    High-tensile steel bands for heavy-duty securing. Suitable for loads over 5 tons. Applied with tensioning tools and sealed with metal clips. Provides rigid, non-stretch securing.

    Polyester Strapping

    Woven polyester lashing straps with ratchet tensioners. Standard working load limits from 500 kg to 5 tons per strap. Flexible, shock-absorbing, and corrosion-free. The most common lashing method for containerized cargo.

    Wire Rope Lashings

    Steel wire ropes with turnbuckle tensioners for extreme loads. Used for break-bulk and project cargo on vessel decks. Working load limits up to 20+ tons per lashing.

    Blocking and Bracing

    Wooden or steel structures that fill gaps between cargo and container walls. Prevents lateral movement without relying solely on friction and lashing tension. Essential complement to strap lashing.

    Container Lashing Best Practices

  • Calculate total securing force needed based on cargo weight and transport mode
  • Use minimum 4 lashing straps per cargo unit (2 each direction)
  • Lash at angles between 30° and 60° for optimal holding force
  • Use edge protectors to prevent straps cutting into cargo or packaging
  • Check lashing tension before departure and retighten if needed
  • Document lashing arrangement with photographs for insurance
  • Comply with CTU Code (Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units)
