How to Prevent Cargo Movement During Transit

Cargo movement during transit is responsible for billions of rupees in damage claims annually. Even small movements of 2-3 centimeters, repeated thousands of times over a long journey, can cause catastrophic damage through abrasion, impact, and fatigue. Preventing this movement requires a systematic approach combining blocking, bracing, lashing, and void-filling techniques.
The Four Pillars of Cargo Securing
1. Blocking
Blocking uses rigid materials (wood, steel, or engineered lumber) placed against cargo to prevent movement in specific directions. Container blocking wedges cargo against the container walls and floor. Internal blocking within packages prevents product movement inside boxes and crates. Effective blocking eliminates movement at the source.
2. Bracing
Bracing spans gaps between cargo and container walls or between cargo units. Inflatable dunnage bags are the most common bracing method – they fill irregular gaps and provide cushioned resistance against movement. Wooden bracing is used for heavy cargo requiring rigid support.
3. Lashing
Lashing straps, chains, or wire ropes actively restrain cargo by applying tension. They work through friction (pressing cargo against the floor) and direct restraint (preventing movement in the lashing direction). Multiple lashings in different directions provide comprehensive securing.
4. Void Filling
Empty spaces inside containers and packages are filled with cushioning materials to prevent cargo from shifting into voids. Materials include inflatable air bags, foam blocks, crumpled paper, and engineered void-fill products.
